Replacing the Varian roughing pump oil and oil mist filter
4-23
To refill the pump with oil
Required materials
•
Chemical-resistant, powder-free gloves
•
8-mm Allen wrench
•
Funnel
•
1-L bottle of Varian GP45 oil
Refilling the pump with oil
1. Ensure that the O-ring on the pump’s oil drain plug is clean and
properly seated.
2. Use the 8-mm Allen wrench to fit and tighten the roughing pump’s oil
drain plug.
Tip:
When the oil drain plug is tightened, the plug seals with an O-ring.
Compression is controlled by the O-ring groove depth in the plug.
Increased torque does not improve the plug seal; it only makes the plug
difficult to remove later.
3. Using the funnel, pour 1 L of Varian GP45 oil into the oil filler aperture.
Tip:
The oil level may be above the sight-glass MAX level, but should
drop to the MAX level or below during the first few days of operation.
Warning:
The roughing pump components can be contaminated
with analyte accumulated during normal operation. Always wear
chemical-resistant, powder-free gloves when performing this
procedure.
Caution:
To avoid oil leakage when fitting the oil drain plug to
the roughing pump,
• ensure that the plug is not cross threaded.
• ensure that the O-ring is not pinched.
• do not overtighten the plug.
Caution:
To maintain pump performance, use Varian GP45 oil.
