5.2.3.3.1 Scale Lines
As shown in Figure 5-2 the longest scale lines represent 10
°
increments of pitch on either side of the
horizon line. Each of these 10° lines has a white number at both ends representing its distance in degrees
from the horizon line. These numbers rotate as roll changes to maintain a constant orientation relative to
the lines.
Scale lines midway between the 10° lines, representing 5° increments, are shorter than the 10° lines.
There are scale lines at
±
2.5° and
±
7.5° that are shorter than the 5° lines. The spacing between the pitch
lines allow at least 30° of the pitch ladder to be shown.
The pitch ladder and scale lines are truncated around the edges of the circular viewing area to avoid being
drawn over other displays elements.
5.2.3.3.2 Horizon Line
The horizon line is drawn at the point that represents zero pitch. The horizon line extends to the edges of
the attitude display area at any attitude.
A ghost horizon is shown whenever the actual horizon line lies outside of the circular viewing area. In
this condition, the pitch ladder continues to move with the actual pitch, but the sky / ground boundary
remains in view to help the pilot keep his orientation. A reduced intensity line marks the ghost horizon
boundary.
5.2.3.3.3 Background
The background on which pitch ladder lines are drawn are blue on the side of the horizon line, which
represents positive pitch (the sky) and brown on the side of the horizon line, which represents negative
pitch (the ground). This sky / ground background fills the entire attitude display area.
5.2.3.3.4 Excessive Pitch Attitude
The excessive pitch display is a chevron type format as shown in Figure 5-3Red chevrons, pointing to the
horizon, are located with their points at +45° and +65° of pitch (sky area) and at -35°, -50°, and -65° of
pitch (ground area).
The pitch ladder continues beyond the normal pitch range of ±90°; to fill the circular viewing area at all
times. The 10° lines outside the normal range have their numeric labels upside-down relative to the
normal numeric labels.
