Appendix A: Collecting and Handling Samples
Caution
•
Observe standard precautions required by a hospital, laboratory, or other
research facilities.
•
Handle and dispose all biological hazard in accordance with the relevant
provisions and procedures.
•
Treat the used cartridge with blood, blood samples and blood sample tools
and blood as a biohazard risk.
•
To avoid direct contact with biological hazards, wear protective clothes
(gown, protective gloves, goggles, etc).
Take caution not to make direct contact with the membrane of the mouth
or eyes, or an open wound.
•
After collecting a sample or using the analyzer or cartridge, wash hands
thoroughly.
Sample preparation
•
Use whole blood for blood gas analysis.
•
When collecting a blood sample, use a blood collection container
(syringes, capillaries, capillary tubes, etc) processed with heparin.
Using a container with spray-dried heparin or solid heparin is
recommended. Blood collection container with any other anticoagulant
other than heparin, such as EDTA, citrate, oxalate, NaF, etc, may
interfere with the sensor performance or affect the measured value.
The liquid anticoagulant may dilute the sample and may affect the
measured value.
•
Make sure no air bubbles are present in the collected sample. A small
air bubble within a sample may affect the measurement result.
•
Do not use a sample suspicious of blood clot, hemolysis or
contaminated with a foreign substance.
•
Use a collected whole blood sample for the blood gas analyzer
immediately. In case it cannot be used right away, place the sample in
a closed container filled with ice and water, and store at the 1 ~ 4 °C
temperature. The stored sample may be used up to 30 minutes after
the collection.
