8.6 Power Supply Module Redundancy
Power System redundancy introduction
A Power System with redundant Power Supply Modules should continue to provide power to the High-
Performance Process Manager without interruption when one of the Power Supply Modules fails or
looses ac power.
CAUTION
Power cable redundancy testing should be performed during a plant shutdown.
SHOCK HAZARD
Troubleshooting, opening this equipment and removing any panels or covers will expose the
user
to the risk of a shock hazard. There are no
user
serviceable parts inside this equipment.
Refer all servicing only to
qualified service personnel
.
Power System redundancy test procedure
Perform the following steps to test the Power System’s redundancy power capability.
Step
Action
1
With the both Power Supply Modules of a redundant Power System operating, place
the
ON/OFF
switch of the right Power Supply Module in the
OFF
position. Observe that
the HPMM and IOP cards continue to operate normally (their
Status
and
Power
indicators are illuminated). Return the
ON/OFF
switch to the
ON
position if operation
continues normally. Should the HPMM and IOP cards not continue to operate normally,
follow the troubleshooting and replacement procedures for the Power Supply Module in
the “Fault Isolation” and “IOP Calibration Procedures” sections.
2
With both Power Supply Modules of a redundant Power System operating, place the
ON/OFF
switch of the left Power Supply Module in the
OFF
position. Observe that the
HPMM and IOP cards continue to operate normally. Return the
ON/OFF
switch to the
ON
position if operation continues normally. Should the HPMM and IOP cards not
continue to operate normally, follow the troubleshooting and replacement procedures
for the Power Supply Module in the “Fault Isolation” and “IOP Calibration Procedures”
sections.
When the lef
t Power Supply Module’s
ON/OFF
switch is placed in the
OFF
position, all
Low Level Analog Input IOPs should report a Soft failure at the Universal Station, but
they will continue to operate normally.
