The number of characters that can be sent/received by SMS are as below.

When SMS messages cannot be received
The SMS Center delivers SMS messages to your FOMA phone as soon as
they are received. However, if your FOMA phone is off or out of the service
area, the SMS messages will be kept at the Center.

The SMS Center keeps SMS messages for a maximum period of 72
hours. You can set the holding period with “SMS validity period”. (See
page 296)

When the holding period expires, SMS messages are deleted
automatically.

You can receive SMS messages held at the SMS Center using “Check
new SMS” on page 295.

Once your FOMA phone receives SMS messages, they will be deleted
at the SMS Center. Your FOMA phone will store the SMS messages.
