REAR WHEEL BEARINGS AND HUBS
See General Warning on page 1-2.
REAR WHEEL FREE PLAY INSPECTION
1.
Raise the rear of the vehicle but do not remove the wheels.
See Lifting The Vehicle, Section 3, Page 3-4.
2.
Using your hands, rotate the wheel. The bearing should rotate smoothly without any unusual noise. If not, replace
the bearing.
See Rear Wheel Bearings and Hub Removal on page 9-5.
3.
Using your hands, attempt to rock the wheel and hub assembly back and forth in the trailing arm. If there is
any observable movement of the wheel and hub in the arm, replace the bearing.
REAR WHEEL BEARINGS AND HUB REMOVAL
1.
Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s).
See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2.
Pry out the thin axle nut flange where it is staked to the groove in the halfshaft
and
loosen the axle nut
.
3.
Lift and support the rear of vehicle and remove the wheel.
See Lifting The Vehicle, Section 3, Page 3-4.
4.
Raise the cargo bed and secure with the bed locking pin.
See Cargo Bed, Section 4, Page 4-20.
5.
Remove the rear brake caliper.
See Brake Pad and Caliper Removal on page 6-12.
6.
Rest the brake caliper on the trailing arm. Ensure that there is no strain on the brake hose.

• Strain on the brake hose or the brake hose fittings can result in damage to the line or fittings and
cause a leak in the hydraulic system, diminished brake performance, or brake failure.
7.
Remove the brake disc.
8.
Remove the axle nut and push the halfshaft out of the hub.
9.
Remove the hub/bearing assembly from the trailing arm by removing the four patch-lok bolts
10. Press hub out of bearing
.
11. Press bearing out of casting.
12. Clean and inspect the hub and casting. Replace any damaged or worn parts.
