Engine RPM Adjustment – Through Early-2012 Model Year
ENGINE
3.
Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield.
4.
Do a quick check of throttle bellcrank movement:
4.1. Push accelerator pedal to the floor and hold.
4.2. Verify the throttle bellcrank makes a positive stop against the mounting bracket tab
.
4.3. If the throttle bellcrank contacts the positive stop too early or not at all, perform the accelerator cable
adjustment first.
See Accelerator Cable Adjustment – Through Early-2012 Model Year on page 5-7.
If
the throttle bellcrank contacts the positive stop tab correctly, proceed to the next step.
5.
Connect a tachometer.
6.
With the park brake engaged and the shifter in NEUTRAL, start the engine.
7.
Push accelerator pedal to the floor. Engine should rise to 4000 ± 100 RPM.
8.
If high speed RPM is incorrect, turn key switch OFF to stop engine. Use long needle nose pliers to bend the main
governor spring tang (1) located on the bottom of the throttle bellcrank
. Make minor
adjustments at a time. Be careful not to touch the hot exhaust manifold.
See preceding WARNING.
– To reduce spring tension and high speed RPM, bend the tang up.
– To increase spring tension and high speed RPM, bend the tang down.
9.
Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 until high speed RPM consistently peaks at 4000 ± 100 RPM. If the specified RPM can
not be set, inspect the governor lever.
See following NOTE.
NOTE:
The governor lever may be damaged, may have fallen out of adjustment, or may have been tampered with
and needs to be reset.
See Governor Lever Reset Adjustment on page 13-16.
10. Disconnect the tachometer.
11. Install the heat shield and tighten the hardware to 78 in-lb (8.8 N·m).
12. Place bed locking pin in the stowed position and lower the cargo bed
.
