Engage the park brake, place the shifter in NEUTRAL, start the engine and connect a tachometer.
7.
Use long needle nose pliers to bend the idle spring tang (1)
until the idle is 1250 RPM.
Be careful not to touch the hot exhaust manifold.
See preceding WARNING.
– To reduce (1) spring extension and idle speed, bend the tang to the right (towards rear of vehicle)
.
– To increase (2) spring extension and idle speed, bend the tang to the left (towards front of vehicle).

8.
Once the engine is idling smoothly at 1250 RPM, adjust the idle stop screw until it touches the idle arm and starts
to increase the engine speed. Stop and back off the screw approximately 1/2 to 1 turn.
9.
To verify the stop screw is in the correct position, push the governor arm (1) with a screwdriver, at the location
shown (2), towards the exhaust manifold (3)
. This pushes the idle arm against the
stop screw. Low idle should now be 1000 ± 50 RPM and the engine should not stall.
