TROUBLESHOOTING AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Test Procedures
11
– Check the battery.
See Test Procedure 1 – Battery on page 11-12.
– Check the fuse at the fuse block.
See Test Procedure 2 – Fuse on page 11-15.
– Check the starter solenoid.
See Test Procedure 6 – Starter Solenoid on page 11-19.
– Check diode.
See Test Procedure 7 – Wire Harness Diodes on page 11-21.
– Check the neutral switch on the transaxle housing.
See Test Procedure 8 – Neutral Switch (Transaxle) on
– Check for continuity of the wire harness on wires 107 and 108.
See Wiring Diagram on page 11-2.
7.
If none of the previous steps resolves the problem, the starter solenoid and/or starter motor has failed.
See the
Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engine manual (CC P/N 103568101).
TEST PROCEDURE 6 – Starter Solenoid
See General Warning on page 1-2.
1.
Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s).
See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2.
Disconnect all wires connected to the solenoid
(Figure 11-16, Page 11-19 and Figure 11-17, Page 11-19)
.

3.
Test for continuity between the small coil terminal (light green wire was connected to) and ground
. If no continuity, replace the solenoid.
4.
Test for no continuity between the two large terminals
– If there is continuity with no voltage applied to the small terminal, the contacts are welded to the two large
terminals and will require replacement of the solenoid.
– Apply 12 volts with the positive lead connected to the small coil terminal and the negative lead connected to
ground. The solenoid should click and show continuity between the two large terminals only when voltage
is applied.
