Step 7:
Determine pinion shim pack thickness.
a. Measure the “A” dimension.
b. Measure the “B” dimension.
c. Calculate shim thickness using the following
formula:
(B + 2.823") = (A + Shim thickness)
(B + 7.170 cm = (A + Shim thickness)
d. Add or subtract the number etched on the end of
the pinion. This gives you the exact number of
pinion shims required.
A

2.823" (7.170 cm)
B
5.105" (12.966 cm)
5.104" (12.964 cm)

1. Traction case machined surface
2. Pinion housing machined surface
A. Distance between surface #1 and cross shaft
B. Distance between surface #2 and pinion shoulder
Step 8:
Adjust pinion to ring gear backlash.
a. Install pinion shim pack.
b. Install pinion subassembly.
c. Install cap screws and lock washers. Tighten in
criss-cross pattern and torque to 60-65 lb-ft
(85 N•m).
d. Install dial indicator.

e. Check for backlash between 0.004 and 0.008"
(0.10 and 0.20 mm). (It is necessary to lock the
pinion from rotating to get an accurate backlash
reading.)
f. If necessary, move shims from one ring gear
bearing cap to another to get proper backlash.
DO NOT change shim pack size, once pre-load
has been determined.
g. Recheck backlash and adjust if necessary.
IMPORTANT
Do not remove or add shims. Move shims
from side-to-side to adjust backlash.
Step 9:
Set the correct tooth pattern (should be “toe
loaded”).
a. Coat gear teeth with Prussian Blue dye.
b. Shift ring gear bearing cap shims from side-to-
side to obtain desired tooth pattern.
c. Check for correct tooth pattern.
NOTE
Correct tooth pattern is obtained by moving the
ring gear (1) and drive pinion (2) in relation to
each other.
