Both the master and slave(s) are elected. An IRF has only one master at one time, and all the other

Local active SRPU
A local active SRPU is the active SRPU of a member device. As an essential hardware configuration, it
manages the local device.
Each member device has its own active SRPU that manages the local device. A local active SRPU is a
required hardware configuration for each member device.
After the device joined in an IRF, the local active SRPU plays double roles (different role for different
function):

Local role: The local active SRPU manages the local device, such as, the synchronization between
the active SRPU and the standby SRPU, processing protocol packets, and generation and
maintenance of route entries.

Global role: The local active SRPU processes IRF related events, such as role election and
topology collection.
Local standby SRPU
A local standby SRPU is the standby SRPU of a member device. As an optional hardware configuration,
it acts as the backup of the local active SRPU.
The active SRPU of the IRF
The active SRPU of the IRF is the local active SRPU of the master and manages the whole IRF system.
The standby SRPU of the IRF
A standby SRPU of the IRF is a backup of the active SRPU of the IRF. A main board of a member device
is a standby SRPU of the IRF unless it is the active SRPU of the IRF.
IRF port
It is an IRF-dedicated logical port, which can be numbered as IRF-port1 or IRF-port2. An IRF port is
effective only after it is bound with a physical IRF port.
IRF physical port
Physical ports used for IRF connection on devices are called physical IRF ports. The S7900E series
uses 10 GE optical ports as physical IRF ports.
Typically, an Ethernet interface or optical port forwards service packets to the network. When bound
with an IRF port, it acts as an IRF physical port and forwards packets among member devices. Packets
can be forwarded include IRF-related negotiation packets, and service packets that need to be
forwarded cross-devices.
