Z-Max Surveying System Operation and Applications Manual

Rover System Setup

As described in Chapter 3, the rover system can either be pole-mounted or backpack
mounted. The choice will determine which modules and accessories are required. As
with the base station, prior to departing for the field, examine the rover system to
ensure that all required components are in the transport case. Also, verify that the
Power Module is fully charged. When all required rover system components are
accounted for, execute the following steps to set up a RTK rover system:

Connect System Components

Connecting the system components will be different depending upon if you are using
a pole or a backpack to mount the receiver, and if you are using a radio or the GSM
modem. Below is a brief summary of each configuration. For a more detailed
description of how the components connect and their purpose, refer back to

Chapter 3 –

Hardware Connectivity

Pole-Mounted Rover System

Attach Radio Antenna Module

Perform this step only if you are using the UHF radio as your data link. Con-
nect the UHF Antenna Module to the top of the GPS Receiver Module.
Ensure the antenna is securely locked in place. It is recommended that the
radio antenna be connected to the radio prior to applying power to the radio,
although failing to do so will not cause any harm to the equipment.

Attach GPS Antenna Module

Attach the GPS Antenna. Where the GPS Antenna Module connects
depends upon the data link being used. When the rover system is using the
UHF radio in the Communication Module, the GPS Antenna Module attaches
to the top of the UHF Antenna Module. When the rover system is using the
GSM modem as the data link, the GPS Antenna Module connects directly to
the GPS Receiver Module. Make sure that the connection is secure.

Attach Communication Module

Attach the Communication Module containing the GSM modem and/or UHF
radio to the right-hand side of the GPS Receiver Module. Make sure that the
module is secure, and the latch is completely closed. The GSM modem or
UHF radio is now installed and ready to be configured.
