K Surveying

connected that serves as the transmitter. Therefore, the Z-Max RTK System will
generally use one of the following data link configurations:
• A Cellular modem at both the base and the rover. The cellular modem and

antenna are inside the Communication Module for both the base and the rover
receiver.

• A UHF transmitter at the base station and the Communication Module at the

rover. The base transmitter is an external radio connected to one of the
receiver's external serial ports and powered with an external battery. The
Communication Module at the rover contains a small radio receiver.

UHF Antenna

When using a UHF radio as the data link in an RTK system, antennas must be
connected at the base and rover to transmit and receive data.
The external base radio uses its own antenna that is attached to either a separate
tripod or directly to the base radio. The base radio antenna is often raised as high
in the air as possible to maximize transmission distance.
The rover system using a UHF Communication Module will use the Vortex UHF
Antenna Module as its UHF antenna. The Vortex UHF Antenna Module is
designed to connect between the GPS Receiver Module and the GPS Antenna
Module as shown in Figure 2.9. There are no cables to attach. The UHF Antenna
Module carries the radio signal through the GPS Receiver Module to the radio
inside the Communication Module.
