3-35 ENGINE

• Install the valve spring with the small-pitch portion

facing

cylinder head.

Large-pitch portion

UPWARD

Paint

Cylinder head

• Put on the valve spring retainer

, and using the valve lifter,

press down the spring, fit the cotter halves to the stem end,
and release the valve lifter to allow the valve cotter

wedge in between retainer and stem. Be sure that the
rounded lip

of the cotter fits snugly into the groove

in the

stem end.

Just before installing the camshaft into the cylinder head, apply
engine oil to the cam faces.

• Install the intake and exhaust rocker arms

washer
