curves, the custom curves embedded in the plug-in’s settings files, or curves created in
the Gamma Curve Editor dialog.
Custom Check Box
The
C
USTOM
check box in the Scan dialog can be clicked on or off at any time. If
the
C
USTOM
box is checked, the default custom gamma curves are sent to the scanner
before a scan is initiated. The custom curves will only be sent to the scanner if the
C
USTOM
check box is checked in the Scan dialog.
If you do not want to use the default custom gamma curves, the
C
USTOM
check
box should be un-checked. No custom curves are sent to the scanner if the
C
USTOM
check box is un-checked. Instead, the scanner will use its factory default gamma curve
settings.
Factory Default Gamma Curves
Nikon has included predetermined default gamma curves, which are resident in
the Nikon scanner’s ROM. Note that the factory default gamma curves are permanent,
and there is no way to change their value.
Default Settings (Macintosh only)
The default settings are loaded by the plug-in whenever it is launched, or any time
the
R
ESET
button in the Scan dialog is selected. The default settings, however, should
not be confused with the factory default settings. The default settings reside in the Nikon
Scanner plug-in’s preferences file.
If the plug-in does not find a preferences file upon start-up, which contains the
default settings, it creates a preferences file and loads it with the factory default settings.
So, in this scenario, the default settings would be identical to the factory default settings.
At any time, you can save the custom gamma curves currently in the Scan dialog
as the default custom gamma curves in the default settings file. This is accomplished by
first clicking the
S
ET
D
EFAULTS
button in the Scan dialog. The custom gamma curves
in the Scan dialog will be written into the preferences file, overwriting the current
default gamma curves in the default settings file. Note, however, that saving these cus-
tom curves to the default settings file will also save the settings of the other parameters
in the Scan dialog, such as film type.
Using the default settings can often save time, as they can be applied repeatedly in
order to attain consistent results across many different images. To load the default set-
tings, click the
R
ESET
button in the Scan dialog. This should not be confused with the
R
ESET
button found in the Gamma Curve Editor dialog.
To restore the original factory default settings to the preferences file, delete the
preferences file and restart the plug-in.
