Windows: You can abort a preview or final scan at any time by pressing and hold-
ing down the ESC key for a few moments.
Autoexposure Cycle
Before a preview or final scan is started, the scanner may analyze the entire film
surface in order to set the optimum contrast and brightness for the given image. This is
referred to as setting exposure in an autoexposure cycle. To achieve optimal scanning
results it is recommended that an autoexposure cycle be performed whenever you insert
a new slide. Whether or not an autoexposure cycle is executed depends on the state of
the
A
UTO
check box, as seen in the Scan dialog. There are three possible states:
1) Don’t want autoexposure cycle for this image • If the
A
UTO
check box is
inactive (blank), as shown in Figure 10.4, no autoexposure cycle will be performed.

Macintosh and Windows.
2) Want autoexposure cycle for this image • If the
A
UTO
check box is active
(contains an “X”), and there is no check mark next to it, an autoexposure cycle will be
initiated upon the next scan. This state, shown in Figure 10.5, indicates that you desire
an autoexposure cycle because the scanner currently has no available autoexposure data
for this image.

This is the Nikon Scanner plug-in’s default state for the autoexposure cycle. It
assumes that you will want autoexposure data.
3) Have autoexposure cycle for this image • The third state, seen below in
Figure 10.6, occurs when the
A
UTO
check box is active and there is a check mark adja-
cent to it. In this case, no autoexposure cycle will be performed upon the next scan.
