8.2 BODY BELTS-PROPER USE
Secure tongues or tails in keepers or
loops provided. Belts should be worn
high on the waist, not around the hips or
pelvic bones.
9 LANYARDS - PROPER USE AND
PRECAUTIONS
Always
use the shortest possible
lanyard. Connect a lanyard above
waist-level to minimize the potential fall
distance. Short lanyards reduce the
severity of a fall and minimize
discomfort from gravity stopping forces
in a fall arrest. If a fall of over 2 feet is
possible, the use of a deceleration unit
(shock absorber) is necessary.
Ensure
the arrow on the shock
absorbing lanyard pouch is pointing at
your back D-ring. North recommends
the use of shock absorbing lanyards
(SAL) as replacements for standard
lanyards. Shock absorbing lanyards
dramatically reduce the force levels on
the body during a fall.
WARNING
Always visually inspect, or have
visually inspected, all snap hook to
D-ring connections before use to
ensure proper engagement. Do not
rely on hearing an audible snap.
CAUTION
Never
loop a lanyard around an
anchor point and fasten the snap
hook directly onto the same lanyard
unless it is designed and certified to
do so. (IE Ty-Back Lanyard)
Never
use a ladder hook to attach a
lanyard to a D-ring.
Never
tie a knot in a lanyard; knots
reduce the supporting ability of rope
lanyards by 50%.
Never
tie or join two lanyards togeth-
er to obtain the length required.
Never
hook your lanyard to an
anchorage point below your back
D-ring.
WARNING
Select the lanyard length and
anchorage point location so that:
1) any free fall is minimized, 2) a
free fall of more than 1.8 m / 6 ft is
not possible, and 3) the falling
worker will not inadvertently strike
an obstruction. When the worker
uses a body belt, the arresting force
on the falling worker must not
exceed 900 lbs (4 kN); when the
worker uses a full body harness, the
arresting force must not exceed
1,800 lbs (8 kN). Greater arresting
forces may cause serious injury or
death. See figure 16 for example of
calculating total fall distance and
minimum clearance requirements.
WARNING
Y-LANYARDS
CONNECT ONLY THE CENTER SNAP
HOOK TO THE FALL ARREST ATTACH-
MENT ELEMENT.
DO NOT ATTACH THE LEG OF THE LAN-
YARD WHICH IS NOT IN USE TO THE
HARNESS EXCEPT TO ATTACHMENT
POINTS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNATED BY
THE MANUFACTURER FOR THIS PUR-
POSE
DO NOT RIG THE LANYARD TO CREATE
MORE THAN A SIX FOOT FREE FALL
DO NOT ALLOW THE LEGS OF THE
LANYARD TO PASS UNDER ARMS,
BETWEEN LEGS, OR AROUND NECK.
