Fall Indicator Inspection
The user must complete the regular
inspection procedures found in section 4
of this manual in addition to inspecting
the Fall Indicator.
There are two Fall Indicators – one
stitched fold and warning on each of the
webbing straps on the back of the
harness. Both are located below the
D-ring for fall protection and above the
sub-pelvic strap (figure 14A).
Check the webbing around the Fall
Indicator and ensure that it is not frayed
or cut. Check the webbing for wear
and/or any hard spots. Be sure that the
webbing fold at the Fall Indicator is not
torn at the stitching or damaged in any
other way. Check that the stitching
holding the folded portion of the Fall
Indicator is complete and not torn or
separated from the webbing. The warning
label must not be visible in any way under
the fold (figure 14B). If one of the
warnings is visible in any way and the
other is not, consider the harness
stressed and unfit for further use. If any of
these conditions exist during the inspec-
tion process, remove the harness from
service immediately and destroy.
8 BODY BELTS (ANSI CLASS I)
North manufactures body belts for:
1) Restraint, with a single D-ring
permanently fixed to the middle of the
back of the belt, 2) Work Positioning, with
two permanently fixed D-rings, one on
each side of the user’s body, 3)
Ladder Climbing, with a permanently fixed
D-ring mounted on the front for attach-
ment to a fall arresting sleeve, and 4)
Combination, incorporating features of the
above.
8.1 BODY BELTS - SELECTION AND
SIZE
Wear the correct size of belt. The belt
should be snug but not confining,
preferably worn near its middle
adjustment. Refer to table 3 to ensure

The visibility of the warning
indicates that the harness has been
subjected to a force rendering the
harness unsafe for use. Further use
could lead to harness failure
causing serious injury or death.
WARNING
North does not recommend the use of
body belts for fall arrest. Potential injury
may result in a fall arrested by a belt. Belt
use should be limited to fall restraint,
work positioning and ladder climbing
duties.
CAUTION
BODY HARNESSES VERSUS BODY
BELTS
While body belts may be used in certain
instances, North recommends the use
of full body harnesses at all times. The
use of body belts is permitted in person-
al fall arrest systems designed to permit
free fall distances of up to 1.8 m / 6 ft,
provided the arresting force on the falling
worker does not exceed 4 kN / 900 lbs
and prompt rescue can be expected.
However, these special conditions can-
not always be achieved in practice.
Therefore, North Safety Products rec-
ommends that the use of body belts be
limited to systems designed to permit
free fall distances of not more than .6 m
/ 2 ft. In all systems designed to permit
free falls greater than this, North recom-
mends the use of a full body harness,
providing the arresting force does not
exceed 8 kN / 1800 lbs. Furthermore, if
a fallen worker is likely to be suspended
for a prolonged period of time before
rescue, the use of a body belt can have
injurious effects. Full body harnesses
are designed to avoid such injuries.
