INTRODUCTION

This manual is supplied to give you basic
instruction on the selection, use and care
of North fall protection equipment. If you
are not certain that this equipment is
adequate for the work you are doing,
consult your supervisor or safety director.
Your North distributor can also recom-
mend appropriate fall protection systems
to meet your job specifications. Each
component of the system must be
compatible with the other components to
provide the protection required.

2.1 FALL PROTECTION
PROGRAM
North Safety Products believes that the
attainment of continuous fall protection,
where fall hazards exist, is dependent on
a consistent collaborative commitment
by management and workers. The
development of, and continuous adher-
ence to, a written policy is necessary to
achieve this goal. The written policy
should consider the following points:
2.1.1 HAZARD ANALYSIS
• both seen and unseen
• understand the job requirements
• any obstructions, above or below
• any moving machinery
2.1.2 PREVENTION VERSUS
PROTECTION
• identify the specifics of the task
• can the hazard be eliminated?
• is personal protection required?
– what is the fall distance?
– what is the worker’s weight?
– what force levels will be exerted on

2. All users of fall protection
equipment must be in good
physical health, must not have a
medical history of conditions that
could be aggravated by a fall,
must be mentally fit, and must not
be under the influence of alcohol
or drugs. Inattention to these
factors may cause falls that result
in serious injury or death.
