FULL BODY HARNESSES (ANSI
CLASS III)
Full Body Harnesses are used in
all classifications of fall protection:
An OSHA
Fall Arresting Harness
(CSA
Group A) incorporates both leg and
shoulder straps secured about the
wearer in such a manner as to spread
the impact forces of a fall over the
buttocks, thighs, shoulders and chest. It
has provision for the attachment of a
lanyard to the back between chest and
shoulder level. The arresting force on a
falling worker wearing a full body
harness may not exceed 1800 lbs / 8 kN.
An OSHA
Fall Arresting Controlled
Descent, Suspension Harness
(CSA
Groups AD) has two permanently
attached suspension D-rings, usually
positioned in the lower front portion of the
harness, to provide stable, secure and
comfortable support. It also has a fall
arrest D-ring permanently attached to the
upper middle of the back for connection
to a separate anchor point. Models are
also available that included a front D-ring.
An OSHA
Fall Arresting Confined
Entry, Exit and Retrieval Harness
(CSA Groups AE) has two retrieval
D-rings attached to the shoulders and a
fall arrest D-ring attached to the upper
middle of the back.
An OSHA
Fall Arresting Ladder
Climbing Harness
(CSA Groups AL) has
a D-ring mounted on the front for attach-
ment to a fall arresting sleeve on a lad-
der climbing system.
An OSHA
Fall Arresting Work
Positioning Harness
(CSA Groups AP)
has a positioning D-ring attached to
each side and a fall arrest D-ring
attached to the upper middle of the
back.
7.1 FULL BODY HARNESSES
SELECTION & SIZE
Your harness should be flexible enough
to meet all the possible requirements of
your job. A fall arresting harness is
required where work must be done in
elevated positions and there is a risk of a
fall. A positioning harness is needed if a
worker must be held in place with his
hands free to work. A suspension
harness is necessary to position and
support a worker from above. A retrieval
harness is needed if a fast means of exit
from a work site might be necessary.
Make sure you have the correct size of
harness. It should fit snugly but
comfortably over your work clothes.
Buckles should close around the legs and
chest so that there is enough of the
straps left over to tuck into the keepers or
loops provided.
7.2 FULL BODY HARNESSES -
PROPER USE
Harness D-rings serving as the fall arrest
attachment point must be located high in
the middle of the back between the
shoulder blades.
7.3 DONNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR
FULL BODY HARNESSES:
7.3.1 VEST STYLE HARNESSES
First, pick up the harness by the back
D-ring. The letter “A”, along with arrows
indicating the
upright
position, is
stamped on
the outside of
the webbing
below the
D-ring pad.
This will allow
you to distin-
guish between
the front and
the back of
the harness. On some models, the leg
straps of the harness are a different color
to help identify the lower portion of the
harness and aid the donning sequence.
Some harnesses are equipped with
additional straps to suit specific needs.
This includes additional shoulder retainer
strap and waist straps/belts to suit your
application if required. Before donning,
ensure that the waist belt is mounted in
the harness waist loops where applica-
ble. In all cases, be sure that all straps,
except the shoulder straps, have been
unfastened before donning. Leave the
shoulder strap sliding bar adjustment
buckles fastened (figure 4A).
Grasp first one and then the other front
shoulder strap, sliding them over your
arms and into position on your shoulders
(figure 4B). Be sure that these straps are
crossed in the back and that the
