Cooling System
ERS devices are water-cooled and therefore remain significantly cooler in operation than air-cooled
devices. This generally has positive effects on the service life of the capacitors and output stages.
Also, the noise level is significantly lower than in an air-cooled system.
To prevent damage to the device the following has to be ensured before connecting it to a cooling
system:
Use a closed cooling circuit:
Our systems should not be operated on open or semi-open cooling water circuits. The reasons for
this are:
a) they tend to become contaminated.
b) In these systems, the salt content increases with evaporation or the oxygen content can also
increase; this makes the water more corrosive.
c) Algae and bacteria as well as organic substances can influence the cooling performance.
Coolant temperature:
It must be ensured that the coolant temperature of the inlet is in the specified range of 18-24°C. If
the temperature falls below this, condensation in the device must be expected, which can lead to
serious damage.
Installation:
The tubing must be made resistant to oxygen diffusion. The materials used in the cooling circuit
should be selected so that they have a small voltage difference (
see appendix C, p. 99
) with the
aluminum heat sinks in the device, so that there is no contact corrosion and / or pitting.
After working on the cooling system, careful ventilation of the system must always be ensured. Air
bubbles in the ERS system can cause local overheating and damage to the system.
Recommendations for the Coolant
The use of unsuitable coolants can lead to damage to the ERS by corrosion, blockage or overheating,
therefore the coolant should fulfill the requirements specified in
Table 16
.

All components used in the cooling system of the ERS systems, including the sealing materials, were
tested for compatibility with antifreeze. "Antifrogen" a monoethylene glycol-based agent, in a 1:1 mix-
ing ratio with water was used for the test.
