Regardless of patient age, electrodes should be replaced
at least every 48
hours to maintain quality signals during long-term monitoring. Over the
course of 48 hours, the electrode gel will start to dry out and the adhesive
will age. After a long period of time, the patient’s sensitive skin also may
be irritated by the gel or adhesive causing
discomfort.
Stabilize the electrode and leadwire with a leadwire
stress loop near the electrode. Tape the stress loop
to the patient. A secured stress loop prevents
leadwire rotation about the electrode snap, leadwire
tugging at the electrode, and ECG artifact.
Thorough skin preparation is very important to help keep ESU interference to a
minimum. Do a thorough skin prep to the skin next to the grounding pad as
well.
Place the right leg electrode close to the ESU grounding pad.
The Multi-Link ESU ECG patient cable is recommended when using the
monitor in the presence of an electrosurgical unit. This cable, with a built-in
ESU filter, helps reduce electrosurgical noise detected on the ECG signal.
