Skin Preparation
The quality of ECG information displayed on the monitor is a direct result of the
quality of the electrical signal received at the electrode.
Proper skin preparation is necessary for good signal quality at the electrode. A
good signal at the electrode provides the monitor with valid information for
processing the ECG data.
Choose flat, non-muscular areas to place electrodes, then follow the
established prep protocol for your unit. Following is a suggested guideline for
skin preparation:
1. Shave hair from skin at chosen sites.
2. Gently rub skin surface at sites to remove dead skin cells.
3. Thoroughly clean the site with alcohol or a mild soap and water
solution. Be sure to remove all oily residue, dead skin cells, and
abrasives. Leftover abrasion particles can be a source of noise.
4. Dry the skin completely before applying the electrodes.
