E
edit box—In Microsoft Windows dialog boxes, a rectangular field
into which you can type new text (for example, a file name) or
make changes to (“edit”) existing text. For example, in Windows,
when you click on a file name, it changes to an edit box so you can
change the file name. In an edit box, you can select a point inside
the text string to type new text; alternatively, you can highlight
part or all of the text string and type over it. You can cut and
paste text, and so on. Refer to Microsoft Windows documentation
for more information about edit boxes and other graphical user
interface conventions.
eXtended Image Format (XIF)—The Pagis image file format
for storing scanned images. XIF extends the standard Tag Image
File Format (TIFF) by employing a multiple-layer scheme for
storing the different types of information in the document. There
are four layers: the layer containing color or grayscale pictures;
the black and white text layer; the text color layer; and the
background tint layer. Each layer has an appropriate resolution,
bit-depth, and compression method.
F
fax image—The representation of a page as binary data
(usually 200-by-100 or 200-by-200 dpi resolution) transmitted or
received by a facsimile (fax) machine or fax modem. Computers
with fax modems can receive a fax image and store it on-line as
an image file.
fax modem—An external device or printed circuit board that
plugs into a PC enabling the receipt and transmission of digital
image data across a telecommunication (phone) line. With a fax
modem on your PC connected to a phone line, you can transmit
and receive document images.
fax printer—A printer driver that is used in conjunction with
fax software and a fax modem on your computer. The fax printer
converts data from the text or image document to be faxed into a
fax-ready black and white image.
file compression—Any of a number of methods applied to a file
to reduce the amount of space it takes up on a computer. See
JPEG as an example.
