3.2.3 Installation of a shaft encoder
A shaft encoder (often referred to as encoder or incremental encoder) is a rotating, incremental
measuring system. The shaft encoder can be used to record the speed of the products to be
marked. This precise measurement of speed is necessary for high quality marking as well as for the
print of 1D and 2D codes and when printing with rows of nozzles.
3.2.3.1 Implemented shaft encoder technology
The shaft encoders used by REA JET are precision optoelectronic measurement systems. Via a
shaft on the inside, a pane of glass with marking lines is led through an optical sender/recipient
unit.

This design principle clearly shows why such a measuring system can be damaged as a result of
improper use (excessive force and impact). For the installation of this measurement system, REA
JET offers respective holder/retaining systems for the various specific applications / environmental
-
conditions.

Shaft encoder DG 5000 with M23 connector (with solid shaft)
Figure 100: Scope of delivery of the shaft encoder with M23 connector
This shaft encoder provides 5,000 impulses per revolution and a very fine resolution.
In the case of a repair, the connector enables the quick exchange of the measuring
system. Therefore, this shaft encoder is highly suitable in applications where the
measuring system cannot be installed with protection and rough operating conditions
are to be expected.
The assembly sheet included in the delivery facilitates the installation.
