IDE device — check the jumper settings on the device
before you install it. See the documentation that comes
with the device for jumper setting information.
An IDE device, such as an IDE hard disk or IDE
CD-ROM reader, must be set correctly as the first
(master) or second (slave) device on the IDE channel.
The standard IDE hard disk is set as the master device
on the fast IDE port (primary channel, IDE1 connector).
The CD-ROM reader in multimedia models is the master
device on the standard IDE port (secondary channel,
IDE2 connector).
Cables
The cables that you use to install optional storage devices in
your system include:
■
a diskette drive signal cable
■
IDE interface cables
■
system power cables.
The addition of a diskette drive requires the replacement of
the existing diskette drive cable. The addition of an IDE
cable in hard disk models requires the replacement of the
existing IDE cable.The existing diskette drive or IDE cable
supports one device.
NEC spare part numbers for cables that support two
devices are as follows:

diskette drive cable for two devices: 158-050561-000
■
IDE cable for two devices: 158-050691-000.
The following figures show cable connector locations on
the system board and power supply. Cable and connection
information for optional storage devices follows the figures.
