Modbus Protocol Testing
Note:
Modbus does not use encrypted communications nor authentication/passwords. When using
this protocol, it is the user’s responsibility to provide end-to-end secured communications to
prevent system configuration from an unauthorized remote computer.
This section assumes you have a working knowledge of both Modbus protocol and the Modbus Poll program. The
chapter consists of steps to test the Modbus protocol on Modbus poll tool version 5.5.0 Build 657. You can check
the version number by navigating to

About Modbus Poll software
. A licensed version was used to for this
test procedure. A trial version can be downloaded for free at
On the distribution CD of the LumaSMART
®
, there is a folder that contains the configuration files for using the
Modbus Poll program which are pre-configured for communicating with the LumaSMART controller. The Poll
configuration file for this example has been setup for:
00-15229-216 LumaSMART, 16 Channels, 16 relay, 4...20 mA analog output
If your LumaSMART is of a different configuration, then the Modbus Poll configuration will need to be modified to
limit the register access to the bounds of the LumaSMART you are using. (Number of Temperature channels,
relays, etc…) Please refer to the Modbus Poll program instructions manual for instruction on changing the
configuration file. See Section 6.5 for the
Modbus Register Map
.
When a configuration or operational change is made through this protocol, it will also be visible on the
LumaSMART controller display panel. However, the display screens provide information gathered when the screen
is opened and do not update automatically. To ensure the changes are accurately reflected, leave the associated
screen, make the Modbus change, then reenter the screen to see the updated value.
