Installation of Probes and Accessories
This chapter describes how to install the fiber optic probes and accessories used with LumaSMART
®
in core or shell
form transformers.
Caution:
Only LumaSense DipTip Rugged Probe and Quality Probe Fluoroptic
®
Probes should be used
with the LumaSMART system.
DO NOT
attempt to attach other types of probes to the system.
Caution:
To prevent damage to the LumaSMART controller and/or components, diligently follow all
instructions provided in this chapter.
LumaSense Engineers can provide technical and installation training. Contact Technical Support at +1 800 631 0176
or [email protected] to schedule training.
3.1
Pre-Installation Planning
Prior to installation, determine the following:
•
Location and method of mounting the probe tip
•
Routing and method of securing the probes inside the transformer
•
Location of the tank wall plate (feed-through point of temperature probes) on the transformer wall
•
Routing of conduit for the external fiber optic extension cables
•
Mounting and wiring connections for the LumaSMART controller
To properly handle the fiber optic probe system, the following is recommended:
•
If the fiber optic probe is damaged, replace the probe. Do not attempt to repair the probe.
•
Test the probes after each step in the installation process. If the fiber is damaged, replace the probe.
•
Ensure the fiber is not mounted or routed through a portion of the coil that might shift or compress
during fabrication or transformer operation.
•
Do not over-tighten fiber optic connectors. The connectors require tightening only by hand or with hand
pliers to the point of resistance.
•
Do not use nylon wire ties to secure fiber optic probes; they can pinch and are easily over-tightened. Use
cotton wire or string wrap to tie the probe inside the transformer.
•
Do not allow the connector end to fall to the floor; doing so can cause the fiber to crack.
Caution:
The most common cause of installation problems is rough handling of the probe fibers.
Inform those involved with installing interior fiber optic probes of proper handling precautions. See
Section 3.3
for more information.
