Both a master and slave in the configuration
A Sonos device can be a mas ter or s lave s everal times over. However, this only applies to the configuration.
Each Sonos device can only perform one role at any given point in time and thus can only play one s pecific
track and not several tracks at the same time.
In
Figure 8, you can s ee that Sonos device 4 is configured in three different mas ter-s lave groups :

As s lave in mas ter-s lave group 1
•
Sonos device 4 is itself the mas ter in two master-s lave groups :
o
Mas ter-s lave group 3 without s laves
o
Mas ter-s lave group 4 with two s laves (Sonos devices 3 and 10)

Thes e mas ter-s lave groups ' configurations can be us ed to create Sonos groups during the running time (dy-
namic group creation).
Cas e s tudy – initial s ituation:

All s laves are deactivated; i.e. no Sonos groups have been created.
Cas e s tudy – continuation 1:
•
You activate Sonos devices 2 and 4 as s laves in mas ter-s lave group 1.
•
Res ult: Sonos devices 2 and 4 s witch from the role of master to the role of s lave for mas ter Sonos
device 1.

Sonos devices 1, 2 and 4 play Sonos device 1's mus ic in s ynchronis ation.
o
The Sonos devices 2 and 4 lose their mas ter functions which they have in master-s lave
groups 2, 3 and 4.
