Hot-Plug and Hot-Swap
Introduction
As illustrated in Figures 9.1 through 9.3, a PCIe switch may be used in one of three hot-plug configura-
tions. Figure 9.1 illustrates the use of PES48T12G2 in an application in which two downstream ports are
connected to slots into which add-in cards may be hot-plugged.
Figure 9.2 illustrates the use of PES48T12G2 in an add-in card application. Here the downstream ports
are hardwired to devices on the add-in card and the upstream port serves as the add-in card’s PCIe inter-
face. In this application the upstream port may be hot-plugged into a slot on the main system.
Finally, Figure 9.3 illustrates the use of PES48T12G2 in a carrier card application. In this application, the
downstream ports are connected to slots which may be hot-plugged and the entire assembly may be hot-
plugged into a slot on the main system. Since this application requires nothing more than the functionality
illustrated in both Figures 9.1 and 9.2, it will not be discussed further.
