5. At the
prompt, you can enter a name
to describe the information the diskette will contain. The
name (the volume label) will appear whenever you view the
contents of a directory on the diskette using the DIR
command. The volume label can be up to 11 characters
long and can consist of any characters or numbers, except
for blank spaces and the following symbols:
“ \ / I ? [ ] : ; < > . , + =
After you name the diskette, press
Enter.
(If you do not
want to name the diskette, simply press
Enter.)
Then you
see messages such as the following:
1213952 bytes total disk space
1213952 bytes available on disk
512 bytes in each allocation unit
2371 allocation units available on disk
Volume Serial Number is 3915-16EE
Format another (Y/N)?
6. To format another diskette, press Y and
Enter.
To return to
the MS-DOS command prompt, press
N
and
Enter.
Backing Up Data
It is very important to keep backup diskettes containing copies
of the files you create. You can copy your data (text and
program files) in several ways:
You can use the COPY or XCOPY command to copy
individual files or groups of files.
You can use the DISKCOPY command to make an exact
duplicate of a diskette.
