ADJUSTMENTS - MAINTENANCE
REPLACEMENT AND INITIAL ADJUSTMENT OF
THE SHEAR BAR - FIGURE 198 TO FIGURE 200
NOTE: Always position tungsten on top (facing up)
The shear bar cutting edge will remain “sharp” providing
all knives have been properly ground and the shear bar is
adjusted every time the knives are ground.
When the cutting edge becomes excessively worn, the
shear bar can be removed, turned over and then re-
installed.
WARNING: Stop PTO and shut off tractor engine
before servicing or performing maintenance.
NOTE
: Please refer to the SAFETY RULES on page
13.
To replace the shear bar, proceed as follows:
1. To make the replacement easier, remove the cutter
head cover (item 11) and the guard used as support
for the cutter head cover (item 10).
2. Loosen the threaded rods (item 1). Loosen the nuts
and screws (item 4) and then unscrew completely
the nuts and screw (item 5).
3. Remove the shear bar (item 6), clean it, and verify
the condition of the cutting edge. Should the cutting
edge be rounded or if the shear bar arrow is straight,
turn it over or install a new shear bar if both cutting
edges have already been used. The shear bar is re-
movable from right to left.
4. Remove the forage debris between the bar and the
cleaner and between the shear bar and its support.
5. Grease the underside of the shear bar with “never
seize”.
6. Put the shear bar back in place.
NOTE:
Apply “Never Seize” to all bolts (items 1, 4 and
5) every time a shear bar is replaced.

Figure 198 Shear bar replacement
To carry out the initial adjustment of the shear bar,
proceed as follows:
NOTE: Always position tungsten on top (facing up).
1. Adjust the shear bar parallel to the knives using the
screws (item 4) on each side which should be in the
grooves of the shear bar, tighten the nut (item 8) and
re-tighten the threaded rods (item 1). Re-tighten the
screw (item 5) and nut (item 9) with a light pressure;
which will serve to adjust the shear bar for future
grindings.
2. Put guard and cover (items 10 and 11) back in place.
3. After having operated for a few hours, check the
quality of the cut forage. If the result is poor, proceed
with another grinding (see page 132) and complete
with a normal adjustment (see page 135).
NOTE
: If the cut is not satisfactory, readjust the parallel-
ism of the shear bar.
NOTE
: All bolts used for the shear bar adjustment are
special. Never use standard bolts.
NOTE
: It is very useful to remove the covers above the
cutter head and feed rolls so that the shear bar
is clearly visible in order to adjust as precisely
as possible the parallelism of the shear bar and
knives. This initial adjustment will remain as is
until knife wear reaches 1/4” (6).
