ADJUSTMENTS - MAINTENANCE
KNIFE REPLACEMENT - FIGURE 195
When replacing knives, always install two matched
knives, one on each side of the cutter head. This will
keep the cutter head well balanced. If you modify or
sharpen the knives, make sure they have the same
weight. The maximum weight difference between two
knives installed on opposite sides of the cutter head
should be
25 grams
.

KNIVES & SHEAR BAR GENERAL INFORMATION
If the Forage Harvester is used in normal conditions (on
a dry field, 5 to 6 hours a day), we recoend to grind the
knives once a day. However, if work is performed on a
excessively muddy or sandy terrain, two daily grindings
are recoended. Refer to page 111 for Knives grinding
procedures.
The cutting head is as important as the shear bar and
vice versa when a perfect cut is desired. Proper main-
tenance and preparation of these two components will
result in the following:
- evenly cut silage
- less required power
- downtime because of mechanical break-
downs
NOTE
: The shear bar adjustment must always be done
following one of these operations:
- knife grinding
- whenever knives must be moved forward
- when new knives have been installed
- when a new shear bar has been installed
WARNING: Stop PTO and shut off tractor engine
before servicing or performing maintenance.
Always replace two
knives at a time,
as shown by these
arrows
These opposite
knives must have a
25 grams maximum
weight difference
