4.3.5 Piggyback / KVO Test Setup
Use the
Piggyback / KVO Test
to evaluate the ability of an infusion device to deliver an initial
volume-to-be-infused (VTBI) or 'dose' at a given rate, followed by a subsequent infusion which is delivered
at a lower rate. This test may be used to evaluate piggyback medication delivery and keep-vein-open (KVO)
capabilities of an infusion device.
In a piggybacked infusion, the device begins by delivering at the
secondary
or higher rate
first
. Once the
secondary VTBI has been infused, the device under test reduces the flow to the
primary
rate and continues
pumping until the primary VTBI is delivered. When KVO operation is enabled, the infusion device delivers
at a set rate, then reduces the flow to the lower KVO rate once the set VTBI has been delivered. Piggyback
and KVO tests are thus analogous and involve measurement of two different infusions, designated by
vPad-IV as #1 and #2, within a single protocol.
Although a Piggyback / KVO Test may be run manually, an automatic test is preferred since the app will
verify the test settings are valid before the test is started. Input
Set Rate 1
and
Set VTBI 1
for the first
delivery of the infusion schedule; then
Set Rate 2
for the second delivery of the infusion; then finally a
Test Duration
which allows for both deliveries to be infused. The app will calculate and display a required
minimum VBTI for the second delivery of the infusion schedule.
The app will require you to input a minimum VTBI 1 of 0.5 ml and a Rate 2 that is no more than one-fifth
of Rate 1. Note vPad-IV does not rely on these test settings to determine when the change of rate occurs
between the first and second deliveries. Instead, the vPad-IV Module detects the change from secondary to
