5.11 BVAD Emergency Operation
If one of the driving unit’s pneumatic systems fails in BVAD operating mode, the driv-
ing unit will automatically switch into emergency operation. In emergency operation,
the intact pneumatic unit will supply both blood pumps. Each blood pump is driven for
two pump cycles. After two pump cycles, the switching unit switches the suctioning
and driving pressures to the other blood pump.
At least 45% of the original flow is available during emergency operation. If the driving
unit is in emergency operation, switch to the replacement driving unit as soon as pos-
sible.
In BVAD emergency operation, the blood pumps must be monitored
continuously to ensure complete filling and emptying. Monitor patient
status. If necessary, support the patient using the manual pump. In
emergency operation, the driving unit will not be able to detect insuffi-
cient patient support. Pneumatic leaks cannot be detected with certain-
ty.
