ATM
asynchronous transfer mode
A multiplexing/switching technique in which information is organized into
fixed-length cells, with each cell consisting of an identification header field
and an information field. The transfer mode is asynchronous in the sense that
the use of the cells depends on the required or instantaneous bit rate.
BER
bit error ratio
The BER is the ratio of incorrect bits to total number of bits transmitted.
binder group
a group of cables sharing the same conduit
C
control
C is a control signal for X.21.
CAS
channel associated signaling
CAS is a type of E1 link where 4 bits of signaling per timeslot are
multiplexed into timeslot 16.
CDV
cell delay variation
CDVT
cell delay variation tolerance
CDVT is the upper limit of allowable cell delay variation. When cells from
two or more ATM connections are multiplexed, cells of an ATM connection
may be delayed while cells of another ATM connection are inserted at the
output of the multiplexer. Similarly, some cells may be delayed while
physical layer overhead or OAM cells are inserted.
CE
circuit emulation
CIR
committed information rate
The CIR is the guaranteed minimum throughput between two end-user
devices over the frame relay network, under normal operating
circumstances.
CLP
cell loss priority
The CLP is a one-bit field in the ATM cell header that indicates the loss
priority of an individual cell.
CO
central office
CPE
customer premises equipment
CPSS
control packet switching system
A CPSS is a proprietary network protocol for communication between
equipment. Similar to X.25, CPSS is a packet-switched system used to
transfer configuration and status information between nodes.
CRC
cyclic redundancy check
A CRC is a process used to check the integrity of a block of data.
