SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The 3M™ Versaflo™ TR-602E Powered Air Turbo is designed to be used in conjunction with
one of the approved headtops (see Reference Leaflet). This product meets the requirements of
EN12941 (Respiratory protective devices – Powered filtering devices).
The Powered Air Turbo has a choice of standard economy battery pack (TR-630) or high
capacity battery pack ( TR-632) and a range of combined particulate/gas and vapour filters, or
particulate filters (one with additional nuisance odour performance). The Powered Air Turbo can
be manually set to provide three levels of airflow (standard, medium and high). It also
incorporates an electronic control unit which provides an audible, visual and vibratory warning of
low battery and/or low airflow into the headtop. The turbo has a filter indicator to provide
information on particulate filter loading and a battery status indicator to provide battery charge
information.

^

The filter loading indicator is for particulates only. It does not provide any information about

gas and vapour service life.

^

usage conditions given in the Technical Specification.
Only for use by trained, competent personnel.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the headtop decreases or stops.
c) Low airflow or low battery alarms activate.
d) Breathing becomes difficult.
e) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
f) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this product. Replace parts only with original 3M spare parts.

^

Do not use these products in flammable or explosive atmospheres.

Spark arrestor should be used in all situations where the Powered Air Turbo may be exposed to
sparks, molten metal or other hot particulates.
For use in environments subject to high magnetic fields contact 3M Technical Service.
Materials which may come into contact with the wearer's skin are not known to cause allergic
reactions to the majority of individuals.
These products do not contain components made from natural rubber latex.

PREPARATION FOR USE

Respirator systems are intended to help reduce exposures to certain contaminants and should
always be handled with care and fully inspected prior to use. Check apparatus is complete,
undamaged and correctly assembled. Any damaged or defective parts must be replaced with
original 3M spare parts before use. Undertake pre-use checks on headtop assembly as outlined
in the appropriate user instruction.

Battery

Select an approved battery. (Please see TR-602E Powered Air Turbo Reference Leaflet for list
of 3M approved batteries). Inspect battery casing, hinge, latch and electrical contact pins on
battery and replace battery if damaged. The battery should be charged immediately after receipt
as indicated on the product packaging (see Fig 1). For battery charging instructions, please refer
to User Instructions provided with battery charging kit. The battery charge can be determined by
pressing on the indicator as shown in Fig 2. (1 bar = less than 20%, 5 bars = 80 to 100%). An
identical battery indicator is also on the Powered Air Turbo display. Fit the battery as shown in
Fig 3. The latch should engage with an audible click. Gently pull the battery pack to confirm it is
locked in place.

Filters

Select an approved filter. (Please see TR-602E Powered Air Turbo Reference Leaflet for list of
3M approved filters). The inner circular seal is the primary seal between the filter and Powered
Air Turbo. The outer barrier prevents ingress of dirt and debris.

^

Inspect filter and inner seal before first installation or reinstallation and immediately replace if

damaged.
Closely inspect filter plastic housing including the corners and latches. Immediately replace if
damaged.
If the filter has been mishandled or dropped, re-inspect fully. If you have any concern, contact
3M Technical Service for guidance.

^

Always properly install the filter into the Powered Air Turbo.

Ensure the Powered Air Turbo is switched off.
To install the filter, place the left side of the filter into the Powered Air Turbo hinge and snap the
right hand side into place (see Fig 4). Gently pull the filter to ensure proper attachment on both
sides. Alternatively, a filter cover can be attached to the filter. Filters and filter covers are marked
with symbols for easy identification and compatibility. See Reference Leaflet for details. Use of
the filter cover is optional but recommended. However, the filter cover must be used if using a
spark arrestor and/or pre-filter. Replace the filter cover if damaged. The filter cover should be
attached before installing the filter onto the Powered Air Turbo. Insert the filter into the cover,
ensuring the bottom latch tab snaps into place and the filter label is visible in the filter window.
Then install onto the Powered Air Turbo as shown in Fig 4. If using the optional spark arrestor
and/or prefilter, place these into the filter cover in the order shown in Fig 5A (where 1= Filter
cover; 2= Spark arrestor; 3= Prefilter; and 4= Filter). Ensure that the cut-outs of the spark
arrestor and prefilter are aligned properly before attaching the filter. See Fig 5B and 5C for
correct positioning of the spark arrestor and prefilter respectively. Spark arrestor should be used
in all situations where the Powered Air Turbo may be exposed to sparks, molten metal or other
hot particulates.

Airflow Check

The Powered Air Turbo is pre-calibrated to ensure the required airflow is provided. It also
compensates for changes in air density, which is affected by elevation (height above sea level)
and air temperature. Before use, undertake airflow check using the airflow indicator tube as
shown in Fig 6. Allow the Powered Air Turbo to run for 1 minute before inserting the airflow
check tube into the outlet. Wait for an additional minute to allow the airflow to stabilise. With the
airflow check tube in the vertical position, ensure that the bottom of the floating ball rests at, or
above, the minimum flow mark for the 'letter' representing your 'zone' (see Fig 6). To determine
your zone, you need to know the elevation and temperature for the environment where you are
conducting the airflow check. Find the zone where your elevation and temperature intersect on
the chart shown in Fig 7.

Alarm Check

The audible, visual and vibratory alarm will activate should the airflow reach the manufacturer's
minimum design flow (MMDF). To check for the correct functioning of the alarms, place a hand
over the outlet of the Powered Air Turbo. The audible and vibratory alarm should activate and
the bottom LED on the filter icon will flash red.

Note:

High environmental noise levels or use of hearing protection may interfere with the user

hearing the audible alarms. Heavy clothing or tasks with high vibration levels may interfere with
sensing the vibratory alarm. Users may need to check for the visual alarms more frequently in
these environments.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

DONNING

1. Select an approved breathing tube (See reference leaflet for list of 3M approved breathing
tubes) and connect top end to headtop assembly.
Inspect the gasket located on the bayonet end of the breathing tube (i.e. the end that connects
to the Powered Air Turbo) for signs of wear or damage. If the seal is worn or damaged, the
breathing tube should be replaced.
2. Insert the bottom end of the breathing tube into the outlet of the Powered Air Turbo and turn
the end of the breathing tube to ensure it is fitted firmly.
3. Select an approved belt (see reference leaflet for list of 3M approved belts). The Powered Air
Turbo has four locking studs (see Fig 8) and the belt has four corresponding holes (see Fig 9).
Insert the four locking studs into the holes on the belt (See Fig 10). Push down on the belt
between the top and bottom holes on each side (see Fig 11). Slide the belt up (See Fig 12) until
the belt snaps over the belt locking tabs on the bottom of the Powered Air Turbo (see Fig 13).
Adjust and buckle the waist belt with the Powered Air Turbo fitted comfortably around your waist.
(See note below for fitting optional backpack). See separate braces user instructions if used.
4. Adjust the headtop as outlined in the appropriate user instruction.
5. Switch on the Powered Air Turbo by pressing the on button for 1 second. The unit will perform
a self-diagnostic. Flow level, filter loading and battery charger indicators will flash and the
auditory and vibratory alarm will activate. Fit the Headtop and ensure at least minimum airflow is
achieved. (The audible/vibratory alarm will sound if below minimum airflow - please see fault
finding).

Note:

When fitting the Powered Turbo to the optional backpack, it is recommended that it is

attached in the orientation shown in Fig 14. The backpack adaptor should be fitted in the correct
orientation to ensure this is possible. Attach the backpack adaptor to the backpack as shown in
Fig 15 and check that it is firmly held in place by the attached fastening. Insert the four locking
studs on the back of the Powered Air Turbo into the holes on the adaptor and ensure a secure fit.

IN USE

The Powered Air Turbo will always start at the standard flow setting when switched on. Press
and hold the fan button for 1 second to change the airflow setting. Repeated pressing of this
button will cycle through the flow settings. If no buttons are pressed after 30 seconds of use, the
display will enter a sleep-mode. Press any button momentarily to exit this mode. The display
also has an indicator for tight-fitting mode. When a breathing tube for a tight-fitting facepiece is
attached to the Powered Air Turbo, the Turbo changes to operate in a tight-fitting mode and the
indicator is lit.
