CHAPTER 10. OPTIONAL IDE INTERFACE

The ZT 8905 can be purchased with a local Intelligent Drive Electronics (IDE) Hard Disk Interface
attached to the bottom side of the board via a carrier board. This feature is useful for single board
applications as well as STAR SYSTEMs where the ZT 8905 needs to have a local (non-shared) hard
disk.

The specific size of the drive (in Megabytes) that is sold with this option may change because the
hard disk drive market continually improves capacity. In general, Ziatech offers a higher capacity
drive for the same or similar price when a new drive is qualified.

The on-board IDE interface is a factory load option at Ziatech. Option D1 to the ZT 8905 includes a
hard disk, mounting board, and connector. When configured for local IDE operation, the ZT 8905
requires one additional slot in the STD 32 card cage. The on-board IDE hard disk is an ISA-based
interface, not a PCI-based interface. The performance of the IDE interface is equivalent to an STD 32
based hard disk controller (ZT 8952 or ZT 8953), so there is no advantage to using the on-board
interface other than for single board applications or STAR SYSTEMs as mentioned above.

It is not possible to configure the ZT 8905 for both on-board IDE operation and STD 32 IDE
operation.

The ZT 8905 provides a green hard disk activity light for local IDE accesses.

HARD DISK MOUNTING

A carrier board is provided for the IDE hard disk. This carrier board has a special connector that
interfaces to connector J7 on the ZT 8905 to provide the IDE signals to the drive. No cables are used
for the interconnection. The carrier board is mounted on standoffs such that the board slides into an
STD 32 connector, providing additional support as well as power for the hard drive unit. The
integrated drive is a 2.5 inch family drive, using a 2 mm connector interface. 3.5 inch drives are not
supported by the carrier board.

ENABLING THE ON-BOARD IDE CONTROLLER

In screen 1 of the BIOS SETUP utility (discussed in the section "System Configuration Overview" in
Chapter 2), select "Onboard" for the IDE interface. This selection automatically configures the
ZT 8905 for I/O addressing as well as interrupt support for the IDE drive mounted on the carrier
board.

SINGLE BOARD APPLICATIONS

The ZT 8905 can be used in single board applications with a local IDE hard disk. The carrier board
provides mounting locations for such applications. Ziatech suggests that the application provide
power both to the ZT 8905 STD 32 connector and the carrier board STD 32 connector. Ziatech also
suggests that the carrier board and ZT 8905 connectors be physically used as a support for the
assembly.
