Removal of the Z Motor
1. Locate the Z axis servo motor at the top of the column of the 2 Op Mill.
2. If the machine can be jogged under power, lower the Z axis so the spindle head sheet metal clears
access to the motor coupler.

3. Power off machine .
4. Disconnect motor encoder and power cables.
5. Mark the two halves of the coupler to aid in alignment at re-assembly.
6. Remove the four SHCS that mount the motor to the machine.
7. Lift the motor off the machine, with half of the coupler attached to the motor’s shaft. Mark the
position of the motor shaft key way on the coupler. Remove the coupler.

8. If the machine cannot be jogged under power, it is possible (although more difficult) to remove the
motor with the Z axis raised. Alternatively, the brake can be released and the head allowed to
descend under its own weight, as follows:
9. First, remove any fixturing from the table and tools from the spindle. Then place something on the
table to protect the table and prevent the head descending too far. The head transit block is ideal
for this.
10. Use the Z axis brake test in Service Code 521 to release the brake. WATCH THE HEAD DESCENT
CAREFULLY and once the head is far enough down, re-enable the brake.
