This link may carry all types of traffic since it contains two multiplexes, the TDM for synchronous data and
the V100 for any traffic. However, there are no restrictions on the use of the standard data ports as
additional V100 aggregates at the same time. Traffic from tributaries will be carried over the link
appropriate to their destinations, so in a more complex network there may be a TDM link carrying TDM
data channels for error-sensitive traffic while on a second link, a normal V100 aggregate port carries
voice, BRI or MPEG packets.

Switched carrier Operation
Aggregate ports are usually connected via a fixed carrier network, for example a VSAT link. However, the
V100 also permits operation over switched carrier links where the circuit is available on a temporary basis
such as DAMA or SCADA networks, or to interface with external ISDN Terminal Adaptors. This latter
application is useful for connecting to Inmarsat services, where there may be a V100 and an Inmarsat-B
terminal (RS449-based switched interface) at a mobile location at one end of a link, talking to a V100 in
the customer’s premises which is connected directly into the ISDN network using the ISDN Link Interface
