DRIVING THE VEHICLE
Run-In Procedure
Since tolerances are tighter in new vehicles, an essential part of getting the most
trouble-free miles, performance, and economy from your Indigo is following the
1000 km run-in period. Observe the following during the run-in period:
Allow the engine to warm up gradually at idle speed. Do not race the
engine.
Avoid full-throttle starts, full throttle acceleration, or unnecessary hard
stops.
Do not maintain a steady engine speed. Vary engine speed through the
engine’s range.
Refer to the maximum recommended vehicle speed table at right to
determine the maximum speed recommended for each transmission gear
through the run-in period.
Driving a Diesel Vehicle
The operational characteristics of a diesel engine are vastly different than those
of a petrol engine. The driving characteristics vary between the two types of
engines due to the type of combustion process the engines utilize.
Diesel engines do not rev as high as petrol engines, but make more usable power
across the RPM (revolutions per minute) range due to a flatter torque curve. Due
to component inertia in diesel engines, the response to engine acceleration and
deceleration will be more sluggish when compared to petrol engines.
The diesel engine equipped in the Indigo develops maximum torque at 2500
RPM. For best driveability, upshift at 3000 to 3500 RPM when accelerating and
downshift at 2000 to 2200 RPM when decelerating.
