0B-5 Maintenance and Lubrication:
5) Remove the spark plug cap and spark plug. Refer to
“Spark Plug Cap and Spark Plug Removal and
Installation: in Section 1H”

NOTE
Valve clearance is to be checked when the
engine is cold. The intake and exhaust valves
must be checked and adjusted when the
piston is at Top-Dead-Center (TDC) of the
compression stroke.
6) Remove the valve timing inspection plug (2).
7) Turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches TDC on
the compression stroke by slowly pulling the recoil
starter rope. Pull the recoil starter rope until the line
(3) on the generator rotor is aligned with the mark (4)
on the crankcase.
8) Remove the valve timing inspection caps (5).
9) Insert the thickness gauge to check the clearance
between the valve stem end and the adjusting screw
on the rocker arm.
Special tool
(A): 09900–20803 (Thickness gauge)
Valve clearance (When cold)
IN.: 0.05 – 0.10 mm (0.002 – 0.004 in)
EX.: 0.17 – 0.22 mm (0.007 – 0.009 in)
Adjustment
1) If the clearance is out of specification, bring it into the
specified range using the special tool.
Special tool
(A): 09900–20803 (Thickness gauge)
(B): 09917–14910 (Tappet adjust driver)
Tightening torque
Valve clearance adjuster lock-nut: 10 N·m (1.0
kgf-m, 7.0 lbf-ft)
