server. INVITE request indicates the call attempt from
User A to User B. INVITE includes the media capability of
SIP Gateway1.

Multiple
Choice
Redirect server sends 300 Multiple choice to SIP
Gateway1. 300 Multiple choice response includes the
information necessary for routing to User B which a
redirect server knows.

ACK
SIP Gateway 1 sends ACK request to a redirect server.
ACK request indicates that Gateway1 received 300
Multiple choice response normally.

INVITE
SIP Gateway 1 sends INVITE request to SIP Gateway2.
SIP Gateway 1 gets SIP Gateway 2 information from 300
Multiple choice response. INVITE request indicates the
call attempt from User A to User B. INVITE includes the
media capability of SIP Gateway1.

Setup
SIP Gateway 2, upon receiving INVITE, sends Setup to
PBX B.

Call Proceeding
SIP Gateway 1 sends Call Proceeding to PBX A. Call
Proceeding indicates that SIP Gateway1 received Setup
and attempts SIP signaling call.

100 Trying
SIP Gateway 2 sends a response to INVITE request to
SIP Gateway1. 100 Trying response indicates that SIP
Gateway 2 has received the INVITE request.

Call Proceeding
SIP Gateway 2 receives Call Proceeding from PBX B.
Call Proceeding indicates that PBX B, after receiving
Setup, proceeds with a call.

Alerting
SIP Gateway 2 receives Alerting from PBX B. Alerting
indicates that User B is ringing.

180 Ringing
SIP Gateway 2 sends 180 Ringing to SIP Gateway 1. 180
Ringing indicates that a callee is located at SIP Gateway
2, and the User B is currently alerted.

Alerting
Upon receiving 180 Ringing, SIP Gateway 1 sends
Alerting to PBX A.
13
Connect
When a called party replies, SIP Gateway2 receives
Release Connect from PBX B.
