Buffer Management for Class Queues
It is not possible for a class to guarantee bandwidth if it doesn’t have enough
buffers for its queue, because the packets can be dropped even before they
have a chance to be scheduled. Therefore it is essential to have a good buffer
management scheme along with a good scheduling algorithm. This scheme
should strike a good balance between buffer availability for each queue and
the amount of memory consumption of these buffers.
Congestion Management on Class Queues
After a packet has been classified in to a leaf traffic class node, it needs to be
queued in to packet queue of the leaf traffic class node. This queuing process
in controlled by RED algorithm. By default RED is enabled on traffic classes.
Either RED or DSWRED can be enabled at a time.
Peak Rate Limiting for Parent Class
As explained earlier, CBQ service parameters are configured for leaf-classes
because they define the traffic flows. Parent classes are an intermediate step in
the MF classification process and primarily aid in MF classification.
However, we will support the configuration of the CBQ Peak Rate(PR) for
parent classes. This sets a collective rate-limit for all the child-classes in that
sub-tree. This feature gives the capability to rate-limit a collection of flows.
PR can be configured for any intermediate class. Its value cannot exceed the
PR of the given class’ parent class.
