Interaction with the PDS

PDS NHS Number Allocations
With Stage 2 processing, NHAIS systems stop using temporary and old format NHS
numbers for all patient registrations; the requirement being that all registered patients
are either successfully traced against the PDS, or have a new, 10 digit NHS number
allocated to them by the PDS.
This means that 10 digit numbers notified to the NHSCR for all patient registrations
made on an NHAIS system will have been either confirmed or allocated by the PDS.
As mentioned earlier in this chapter, new functionality has been put in place to handle
any Allocation Request to PDS that times-out. If an Allocation Request to the PDS
times-out it is sent to the PDS Allocations Queue (see below) where they can be
manually processed using the AR screen.
The PDS Allocations Queue
Allocation Requests are passed to the PDS Allocations Queue when:
•
they have timed-out on either the ID or LX screens;
•
the system has been configured so that the ID and LX screens automatically
pass all Allocations Requests to the Queue without you having to wait for a
pre-defined timeout period; or
•
they have timed-out from the AJ-BOAJ automatic update of a type 4
(immigrant) registration.
Using a combination of search criteria, the AR screen allows you to look through the
PDS Allocations Queue and examine the entries which match your criteria.
For further information on the AR screen, please refer to section 12, chapter 3 of this
manual.
An Example of the Allocation Process
What follows is an illustration of what happens between a new patient registration on
NHAIS and its interaction with the PDS.
The sequence of events is this.
•
The patient’s details are entered on the ID screen (or displayed on the LX
screen) and traced against the PDS. (Refer to section 3, chapter 1 of this
manual for the details on the ID screen, and chapter 5 of the
HA/GP Links

for the LX screen.)
•
The PDS hasn’t found the patient’s details and gives you the option of either
changing the details and retrying the trace, or to proceed to having the PDS
allocate a new NHS number.
•
You may need to clear any query messages – see later in this section for details.
•
The screen will ask you to confirm that you want the PDS to allocate a new
NHS number.
•
When allocated, the ID (or LX) screen will be updated with the new NHS
number.
