Processing in Expert Mode
Intermediate mode should provide more than enough tools to create the precise sound you want and we recom-
mend that the majority of advanced users stop there.
But for the brave, Expert mode brings out every available control to the front panel. There are no hidden “back
door” controls in this mode. For better or worse, they’re all out there and we’re leaving it up to you to judge whether
using them is in your best interest. (The home improvement store will rent a floor sander to you without asking if
you know how to use one; if you end up sanding your way into the basement, well...)
The additional controls found only in Expert mode fall into several different categories.
Some are more “niche” controls useful mainly when creating factory presets which don’t have widespread
application for the majority of end users.
Others may appear to have no obvious effect when casually adjusted but can actually create interactions between
different sections of Omnia.7 that may only reveal themselves on some program material (thus the reason why
authors of factory presets listen to countless of various program material before declaring a preset suitable for
release).
Some require an especially intimate knowledge of how Omnia.7 works “under the hood” and are risky to adjust
without a very deep understanding of the product.
So, with all of the disclaimers we can muster out of the way, here’s a complete rundown of life in Expert mode.
Switching to and from Expert mode is done in the
AM > Processing > About Preset
menu.
The
Processing
menu in Expert mode includes the same sixteen sub-menus found in the Intermediate mode:
Load Preset, Save Preset, Preset Protection, About Preset, Downward Expanders, Input AGC, Wideband AGC 1,
Parametric Equalizer, Multiband Setup, Multiband AGC, Multiband Thresholds, Dry Voice Detection, Wideband
AGC 2, Band Mix, Clipper,
and
Bypass.
The
Load Preset, Save Preset, Preset Protection, About Preset, Phase Processing, Parametric Equalizer, Multiband
Setup, Multiband AGC, Multiband Thresholds,
and
Bypass
menus are all identical to their counterparts in the
Basic and Intermediate modes and as such their functions will not be addressed again here.
As the majority of the controls in Expert mode are also present in Intermediate mode, this chapter will address and
explain only those controls unique to Expert mode. For a full explanation of the other controls, please reference the
previous section “Processing in Intermediate Mode”.
Downward Expanders Menu
The Downward Expanders menu in Expert mode offers an additional sub-menu labeled Expander Speed.
The Attack control determines the speed with which the Downward Expanders act to reduce gain in each band
when the program audio falls below the threshold. Lower settings provide slower attack speeds, while higher
settings result in faster attack speeds.
The Release control determines the speed with which the Downward Expanders act to return gain to each band
when the program audio rises above threshold. Lower settings provide slower release speeds, while higher settings
result in faster release speeds.
The Attack (coupled) control allows you to adjust the attack speed of all of the bands simultaneously by an equal
amount.
The Release (coupled) control allows you to adjust the release speed of all the bands simultaneously by and equal
amount.
The Speed (coupled) control allows you to adjust both the Attack speed and Release speed of all the bands
simultaneously by an equal amount.
