2. Select the RAID level in the
Select RAID level
drop-down list. You can choose from the following:
RAID 0 (striped)
RAID 1/1+0 (mirrored)
RAID 4 (parity)
RAID 5 (rotating parity)
(default)
RAID 6 (rotating dual parity)
Notes:
RAID 1+0, also known as RAID 10, is automatically configured when you select
RAID 1/1+0
(mirrored)
and use an even number of drives, with a minimum of four.
For more information on RAID levels, see
,
3. Set the stripe size using the
Preferred stripe size
drop-down list.
128Kbytes
is the default and
recommended setting, but you can also choose
64Kbytes
,
32Kbytes
, or
16Kbytes
.
Note
It is strongly recommended that you do not change this setting.
4. Set which controller will be the “owner” of this array (that is, the one that manages it under most
circumstances) using the
Select array owner
drop-down list.
5. The
Online Create
check box is checked by default. Do one of the following:
Leave it checked if, after step 8, you want to be able to access your volumes right away. This slows
down the RAID array creation process, and access to the volumes can be slow during this time.
Uncheck the box if you want to speed the RAID array creation process. This option makes your
volumes unavailable until the RAID array creation process is complete.
6. The
Enable advanced feature support
check box is checked by default.
Note
This setting is NOT CHANGEABLE after initial configuration. If you deselect
Enable advanced
feature support
, volumes on this RAID set will NEVER be able to use advanced features (such as
snapshots and replication). Even if you don’t think you want to use these features now, if there is any
chance that you may want to in the future, leave
Enable advanced feature support
selected.
Do one of the following:
Leave it checked if you want advanced features to be enabled for this array.
Uncheck the box if you want advanced features to be disabled for this array.
Notes:
Enabling advanced features creates two hidden volumes per array, one for the snapshot reservation
and one for metadata. These count towards the per-unit maximum of 254 volumes.
Each Nexsan High-Density Storage system (whether a single unit or with expansion units attached)
can contain a maximum of 32 individual RAID arrays. However, this maximum goes down for arrays
with advanced feature support that are built with 6TB or 8TB hard drives. For example, a system fully
populated with 6TB hard drives can have a maximum of 23 RAID sets with advanced feature support
enabled, and a system fully populated with 8TB hard drives can have a maximum of 18 RAID sets
with advanced feature support enabled.
For detailed information regarding the snapshots and replication features, see the
Nexsan High-
Density Storage Snapshots and Replication User Guide
.
7. (E-Series only) If there are self-encrypting disks (SEDs) installed in the unit, the
Encrypted array
check
box may be used to encrypt the array immediately. Checking this box disables the check boxes below all
disks that are not SEDs. Encrypting an array prevents user data being read from disks that are removed
