Supplem ental R estraint System
(SRS)
The term SRS means that airbags
are intended as a supplem ent to
seat belts. A irbags alone cannot
protect as well as airbags plus seat
belts in im pacts for which the
airbags w ere designed to operate,
and do not afford any protection
w hatsoever in crashes for which
the system is not designed to
deploy.
The SR S uses tw o crash severity
levels (thresholds) to activate
either the Em ergency Tensioning
R etractor (ETR) or airbag or both.
A ctivation depends on the direction
and severity of the impact, exceed­
ing the thresholds and fastening of
the seat belt.
Seat belt fastened

ETR activates
• second threshold exceeded:
airbag also activates

• first threshold exceeded:
airbag activates, but not ETR

E m ergency Tensioning
R etracto r (ETR)
The seat belts are equipped with
em ergency tensioning retractors.
These tensioning retractors are
located in each belt’s inertia reel
and becom e operationally ready
with the key in steering lock
position 1 or 2.
The em ergency tensioning re­
tractors are designed to activate
only w hen the seat belts are
fastened during frontal and front­
angled im pacts and rear impacts
exceeding the first threshold of the
SR S and in rear impacts exceeding
a preset security level. They re­
m ove slack from the belts in such a
w ay that the seat belts fit more
snugly against the body restricting
its forw ard m ovem ent as much as
possible.
In cases of other frontal impacts,
roll-overs, certain side impacts,
rear collisions, or other accidents
w ithout sufficient frontal or rear
im pact forces, the em ergency
tensioning retractors will not be
activated. The driver and pas­
senger will then be protected by
the fastened seat belts and inertia
reel in the usual manner.
