Chapter 6. Installing and removing components
Install or remove hardware components, such as memory modules or input/output expansion cards.
Some installation procedures require you to remove an installed component.
Returning a device or component
If you are instructed to return a device or component, follow all packaging instructions, and use any
packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
Installation guidelines
Follow these guidelines to remove and replace compute node components.
v
Read the safety information in the Safety topic and the guidelines in “Handling static-sensitive
devices” on page 36. This information will help you work safely.
v
When you install a new compute node, download and apply the most recent firmware updates.
Download and install updated device drivers and the compute node firmware. Go to the IBM Support
site to download the updates. Select your product, type, model, and operating system, and then click
Go
. Click the Download tab, if necessary, for device driver and firmware updates.
Note:
Changes are made periodically to the IBM website. Procedures for locating firmware and
documentation might vary slightly from what is described in this documentation.
v
Observe good housekeeping in the area where you are working. Place removed covers and other parts
in a safe place.
v
Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.
v
Before you remove a hot-swap compute node from the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis, you must
shut down the operating system and turn off the compute node. You do not have to shut down the
IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis itself.
v
Blue on a component indicates touchpoints, where you can grip the component to remove it from or
install it in the compute node, open or close a latch, and so on.
v
Orange on a component or an orange label on or near a component indicates that the component can
be hot-swapped, which means that if the compute node and operating system support hot-swap
capability, you can remove or install the component while the compute node is running. (Orange can
also indicate touchpoints on hot-swap components.) See the instructions for removing or installing a
specific hot-swap component for any additional procedures that you might have to perform before you
remove or install the component.
v
When you are finished working on the compute node, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and
ground wires.
See the ServerProven website for information about supported operating-system versions and all compute
node optional devices.
