3.1 System hardware

The x455 provides a scalable and flexible hardware platform. There are a
number of important aspects of the system hardware to consider when planning
your configuration. These are discussed in this section.

“Processors” on page 56

“Memory” on page 57

“PCI-X slot configuration” on page 61

“Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet controller” on page 64

3.1.1 Processors

xSeries 455 servers combine copper-based, XA-64 Enterprise X-Architecture
technologies with 64-bit, Intel Itanium 2 processors.

Table 3-1 lists the processors standard in each x455 model and the part number
of additional processors.

Table 3-1 Processors in each x455 model

The L2 and L3 cache run at the full speed of the processor.

A total of four processors can be installed in the x455. One, two, three, or four
processors can be installed. Each processor must be the same speed and cache
size. Each processor option includes the processor with heatsink
(pre-assembled) and its associated power module.

When you have a multi-node configuration, all nodes must have four processors
installed. That is, only 8-way and 16-way are supported.

Processors must be installed in a specific order, as shown in Figure 3-1 on
page 57. Special tools are required to install the processors and these are
included in the option. We recommend that you update the system abstraction
layer/extensible firmware interface (SAL/EFI) code after the installation. To
download the most current level of SAL/EFI code for the server, go to the x455
device driver page:
